Doing The RIGHT Thing

Pinnacle Pointe Hospital has initiated a program to teach life skills to their residential patients. The children recently completed a first aid/CPR training class from a certified staff member. The note below came from an RN at the facility.

“This is why I love my job: A patient was in the quiet room in a temper and he slammed the door so hard it made me jump out of my skin. When he was calm, I said, Honey, you slammed that door so hard you almost gave this old lady a heart attack. What would you have done if I'd fallen down dead on the floor? He gave me a wry grin and said, CPR.”

“I want to acknowledge an employee that did and excellent job early Saturday morning, May 2, 2009. Karen Heidorn, RN on the daybreak unit answered the telephone before the operator came on duty. The caller was a gentleman from Hopewell, Va. that was on a bridge and was going to jump. He reported he had nothing to live for and no one would listen to him. Ms. Heidorn kept the man talking until I called the Hopewell Police Department and they arrived at the bridge and escorted the gentleman to John Randolph Emergency Room. He tried to hang up on Ms. Heidorn several times before the police arrived, but she managed to keep him talking. She deserves the Employee of the month award if not the employee of the year. Great job Karen.”

“I am writing this letter about Dr. Brian Brooker our CEO here at Cypress Creek Hospital.  I really don't know where to begin to talk about the positive things he has done for this facility, because there are quite a few.

I will start from the first time I met Dr. Brooker after I came back to Cypress Creek from Kingwood Pines.  He has always been positive and had a smile even though sometimes we would be doubtful of something.  To him, we here at The Creek will always be a success, no matter what.  I can not leave out the time during Hurricane Ike.  I was not here but I called on several occasions to check on every one and the staff would always tell me he was busy doing something at the hospital.  I could hear all the alarms in the background going off when I called.  By account from staff he and Ismael Pantaleon, our Safety Officer, and other staff worked tirelessly to take care of the facility, patients, and staff.  Those were very difficult times for all of us.  Our facility has since been reinforced by a better, much larger fence.

Prior to our visit from Joint Commission, Dr. Brooker would be on our units daily and several times a day.  He would check our refrigerators, halls, rooms, med rooms, and treatment rooms for compliance.  He would not expect his staff to do anything that he wouldn't do himself.  He often picked things up and cleaned up things when he comes through.

I have been a nurse for going on thirty-three years.  I have been here at CCH going on 11 years and I have worked for quiet a few CEOs.  Dr. Brooker has been the most positive one and never loses faith in us.  He has the most integrity of any CEO I have ever known.  He inspires me every day to do even better than I already do.  I really did not know that this could be done.  I felt I needed to share this with someone to let you know what kind of CEO runs our great facility.”
